Do you know why the place you live is named what it’s named? Some have straightforward origins, while others leave even those who have been there for decades scratching their heads. In an effort to unravel the meaning behind state and city names across the U.S., WordTips has created a map featuring the literal translations of their names—opening a window to the history of each area.

“To know the meaning of the place names around us is to learn how the land, the history and the culture of a locality have developed over the centuries,” writes the WordTips team. To find these answers, they turned to etymology, as well as the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Encyclopedia Britannica, the American Library Association, and regional news reports, looking for at least two sources for each “literal translation.” In the end, they uncovered the meaning of all U.S. state names, each U.S. state's capital city, and 178 of America’s biggest cities.

“While many state names derive from Native history and/or the features of the land, some bear the marks of colonialism,” shares WordTips. For example, The Carolinas get their name from King Charles II and his father, Charles I, and their state capitals were named after European explorers Sir Walter Raleigh and Christopher Columbus. Meanwhile, “Minneapolis” comes from “Minne,” the Sioux word for water, combined with the Greek suffix “polis,” which means “city.”

Other bits of history that stand out in state and city names are the cases of Seattle and Chicago. The former means “Land of Chief Si'ahl,” making it the only major city named after a Native Chief. As for Chicago, its most common accepted origin is the Algonquin word “shikaakwa,” meaning “striped skunk” or “onion,” the latter of which was spotted in abundance by early explorers around Chicago's lakes.

French and Spanish colonizers also left an imprint via the names they chose, especially in the southern U.S. Most major cities in California hold a Spanish name that pays tribute to a Catholic figure, such as San Diego (a Spanish friar) or San Francisco (Saint Francis). “Los Angeles” comes from “El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Ángeles” (The Town of Our Lady the Queen of Angels), in reference to the Virgin Mary. On the other hand, Louisville, Kentucky, was named after the French king Louis XVI, while Louisiana owes its name to his great-great-great grandfather, King Louis XIV.

Many states and places are also named after people. Washington State pays tribute to the first U.S. president, but other places honor more obscure figures. Cincinnati's name comes from Roman statesman Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus; while Bismarck, North Dakota, is named after Otto von Bismarck, known as “the founder of modern Germany.”

Cherry blossoms are a popular sightseeing event in Japan. But as much as we love these pink flowers, they are not around for long. To make the most out of the cherry blossom season, the forecasters at Weather News have shared a helpful map that shows when the cherry blossoms will begin to bloom across Japan.

According to their first sakura forecast for the spring of 2024, Weather News predicts that blossoms will arrive quite a bit earlier than usual this year. The pink flowers are expected to make their debut in Tokyo on March 17, seven days earlier than the average, based on data from 1991 to 2020. This forecast also predicts that the first region to experience the bloom will be Fukuoka, where the cherry trees are expected to blossom one day earlier on March 16. On the other hand, some areas of Hokkaido are not expected to see sakuras in bloom before May.

The differences in dates across Japan is attributed to a phenomenon known as “sakura front.” Since the weather is much warmer in southwestern Japan than in the cold northern regions, they get to enjoy the pastel pink flowers much earlier. Still, these blooms are known for transforming landscapes all over Japan, offering their fans even more chances to marvel at their beauty.

If you are planning a trip to Japan to catch a glimpse of the cherry blossoms, this is a great place to start. However, be mindful that the dates marked on the maps are when the buds are expected to begin blossoming. Most of the time, it takes anywhere between a few days to a week for them to fully bloom. On top of that, this is just the Weather News' first forecast, and an updated version will likely come out before the spring, which could provide more accurate dates. To stay up to date with Weather News' predictions, you can visit their website.

The Map of Plants

Plants provide oxygen, fill the landscape with colorful flowers, and some even feed us. But looking at the big picture, it can be hard to grasp how different they are from one another. That's why physicist Dominic Walliman of Domain of Science set out to make a comprehensive Map of Plants. Having worked on similar graphics, like a revealing Map of Medicine, Walliman highlights the differences and similarities of flora to teach us about their inner workings.

Walliman's love for conceptual maps dates back to his university days. Feeling frustrated after losing the thread of the lectures he was attending, he spent weeks wondering about how the material covered in each session related to one another. “What I needed, I thought, was a conceptual map of all the material so I had a kind of geographical representation of it to help me see how everything fitted in with everything else: see where I was and where I was going,” he told My Modern Met. “Out of that frustration I started creating my maps and videos of different areas of human knowledge to help myself and others get our heads around these subjects as a good primer on what exists and what might pique our interest for further reading.”

His Map of Plants follows a similar structure as his previous works—it's an alluringly colorful and detailed chart that unfurls as one looks at it. The map explains concepts and classifications, including the DNA differences between plants and their reproductive system, which can involves either spores or seeds.

“In this map of plants I summarize all of the different kinds of plants from algae all the way through bryophytes, ferns, gymnosperms, angiosperms, monocots, eudicots, rosids and asterids,” Walliman states. “I explain how they are related to each other due to their evolutionary history, and the features that make plants so successful, leaves, roots, a vascular system, spores, seeds, flowers and fruits.”

You can take a guided tour around the map with Walliman in the video below, and pick up your own printed version at Domain of Science's website. More products featuring Walliman's informational maps is also available on Redbubble.

Whether it is used or new, there's a lot to keep in mind when buying a car. The model, year, and mileage and are all important factor to consider. While color may be a superficial aspect compared to the functionality, the shade of the car is often the first thing others will notice about your vehicle—just ask anyone hailing an Uber of Lyft. Visual Capitalist created a graphic based on automotive research tool I See Cars‘ report about the most popular car colors in the U.S. in 2023, and the results go further than a simple color choice.

Leading the pack is white at 26%. According to some users, this color is favored for keeping vehicles cooler in sunny areas, as well as needing lower maintenance when it comes to minor scratches—making them ideal for fleets. Next in the lineup is black at 22%, and close behind are two similar shades, gray and the lighter shade of silver, at 19% and 12% respectively. The first vibrant color on the list is blue at 10%, followed by red at 8%.

However, while white, black, and gray shades are often preferred for practical reasons, another factor for their popularity is availability. Most car dealers only have neutral colors on hand, and requesting something different can mean a backorder, with the buyer not receiving their car for months. Many times, this results in shoppers picking whatever is readily available. The current choice of colors also speaks to the evolution of car trends. Shades like beige and gold were very popular in the late 90s and early 2000s, while they barely make up 0.6% of the car sales these days.

Altogether, neutral shades make up nearly 80% of cars on the roads today. Only time will tell if bright hues will reign at some point of the future. They would definitely bring a much needed pop of color to many big cities.

You can explore Visual Capitalist's Most popular car colors graph below.

Places big and small have one thing in common—they all rely on tourism to boost their economies. And much like companies, they also need an alluring logo that both inspires new customers (or travelers) and represents what's best about their area. Have you ever seen the logo for the place you live in? Maybe it's colorful and fun, or elegant and simple. Reddit user Dremarious put together a map featuring the tourism logos for all 50 U.S. states, allowing us to conveniently compare their designs.

The logos range from serious to playful. Many are produced in all caps, like Texas, Maine, Alaska, and Montana. There are also a couple of states that mix up upper and lowercase letters to be whimsical with a more relaxed typeface. Ohio incorporates its map into its logo, while Colorado features the symbol on its state flag in its design. Color can also be used to celebrate each state's culture, like Georgia using a peachy shade, and Oregon embracing a forest green.

These values can also be observed in tourism logos from around the world. Redditor LlamaDestroyer14 created regional maps compiling the logos used by tourism boards in each country. Going global, many choose to boast their national colors to stand out, like France and Denmark to name a few. Then there is Spain, which keeps its signature red and yellow hues, but also appears to pay tribute to its 20th century art movements with its daring typeface.

Other countries have chosen to ditch their national colors to make a case for their attributes. The U.S. for example, is made out of tiny dots, signaling the many cities and cultures that shape it. Meanwhile, Brazil, Ecuador, and Mexico have over four different colors in theirs to spotlight their rich biodiversity. Building from this, Australia chose to spotlight their famed kangaroos and landscapes in their vibrant logo.

Taking a shower is a routine part of life. For some, it is a relaxing activity; for others, it is a brisk way to start the day. But have you ever thought of how much it costs? QS Supplies, a UK-based bathroom furnishing provider, set out to find the yearly price of taking a warm shower around the world. They then put together their findings in an insightful infographic, revealing that the costs of jumping into the shower are not the same for everyone.

To measure how much a year of daily showers cost, QS Supplies looked at electricity and water usage costs in 89 countries. They then compared it to the average annual income in each country to determine its overall affordability.

On average, the price of a warm shower is $260 a year, but there are huge differences from country to country. In Denmark, a year of daily hot showers costs $802, making it the most expensive in the world. On the other side of the spectrum, Egypt and Suriname have the lowest annual shower costs at $33 per year. In the U.S., the yearly cost of taking a shower is $264, making it the 36th most expensive in the world.

Despite the disparaging numbers, the tables turn once again when looking at each country's economy. The country with the most affordable annual shower costs is Norway, as it equates to 0.31% of the average local income. It is followed by Kuwait and the U.S., where it represents 0.35% and 0.49% respectively. Meanwhile, showers are prohibitively expensive in Rwanda, where they take up 46.17% of the average annual income, making them the least affordable in the world.

The stark differences in showers are not far off from the overall global inequality panorama. That's why it is important to guarantee everyone has access to it. After all, even the UN considers it a human right “to have physical and affordable access to sanitation, in all spheres of life, that is safe, hygienic, secure, and socially and culturally acceptable.” How often it should be done is a different conversation.

Whether it was the Boogeyman, Krampus, or El Coco, most of us grew up with a mysterious, scary figure that lurked in the shadows. Our parents would bring it up as a way to make us behave or make sure we went to bed at night.

Depending on where you grew up, this figure could take on many forms. Sometimes it's an evil witch, sometimes it's a zombie, and sometimes it's just a straight-up monster. And though scaring your kid into behaving is now known to not be the best technique psychologically, there are still some good reasons to talk about these legendary figures at the appropriate time. In some cultures, using allegories and storytelling is the prime way that parents teach their children to regulate their emotions.

Just in time for the peak of the spooky season, TheToyZone has put together a fun map of legendary characters around the world. This includes the UK's Boogeyman, which started as the Bogeyman in the 15th century. Many of the “boogeymen” around the world have similarities in that they are geared toward teaching children a lesson for not listening to their parents. Some have milder “punishments” for not listening, while others are more menacing and threaten to eat or kidnap children who misbehave.

In Spain, El Hombre Del Saco is an old man who eats the children that he collects. Variations of the “Sack Man” exist across different Latin countries. In Egypt, the figure is called Abu Rigl Maslukha, which translates to “Man with Burnt Legs.” The legend says that he was burned as a child by his parents for not listening and now returns the favor to other mischievous kids.

Many figures are also tied to the local environment and/or the specific dangers that children face in a particular country. For instance, Tata Duende is Belize's mythical goblin. This small creature wears a wide-brimmed hat and is the protector of animals and the jungle. As such, Tata Duende is used to scare children into not wandering off at night or going into the jungle.

But not all creatures intend to harm children. Indonesia's Wewe Gombel is much more benevolent. This female ghost actually takes mistreated children away from their parents and keeps them safe in her nest until their parents change their ways.

Scroll down to see what form the boogeyman takes in different countries, and then take a dive into the folklore behind these spooky creatures.

Understanding and learning about the many fields of medicine can be daunting, even for those somewhat familiar with it. Knowing that a good conceptual map can help anyone studying a particular subject, physicist Dominic Walliman of Domain of Science set out to make an illustrated map of medicine that is as welcoming as it is thorough.

A passionate scientist, Walliman has created a series of maps and videos of different areas of human knowledge to help others grasp these subjects as a primer on what exists and what might pique their curiosity for further studying. “Medicine has always been interesting to me as I'm not very familiar with it, but it is such an important part of our society,” he tells My Modern Met. “So I thought it'd be a good one to map out to see everything on one page.”

Wallan’s maps usually take him about one or two months, but his Map of Medicine took four months to complete. He describes it as a “mammoth project.” Researching, drawing, and then finalizing the graphic design took a long while, but Walliman is really proud of the result. “I'm still learning what works well and developing my style,” he admits. “I think this Map of Medicine is my best work yet.”

The layout highlights the connections between fields, as well as making room for more abstract aspects, such as the principles of medicine and clinical trials. The resulting work is both a way to ease oneself into the various areas, foundations, and practices of medicine; and a celebration of the wide reaches of modern medicine. His simple line drawings make even the more complex subjects easy to comprehend, like molecular biology or rheumatology. The color palette, as well as the anatomical design, further aids in Walliman's mission to make knowledge accessible to a wide audience from all walks of life.

Walliman hopes his map makes the massive field of medicine less nebulous and intimidating. “All the elements are placed in a logical layout in a visually pleasing way, and also setting bounds on the subject so you know it doesn't go on forever,” he explains. With the map as a starting point, he offers a 50-minute video to explain every single aspect of it. On top of that, he wants to highlight how well modern medicine is doing, as it can be difficult to scientifically figure out which interventions actually work. “This is why I have sections of the placebo effect and clinical trials,” he explains.

Whether you're simply wondering what doctor you should be talking to about a specific issue, or hoping to unravel what goes into keeping us healthy and safe, this map may point you in the right direction.

To learn more about Walliman's work, you can follow Domain of Science on YouTubeInstagram, and Twitter. To get your own physical version of the map or score some cool items featuring this design, visit his webstore and Redbubble.

It's hard to summarize everything that occurred in one year. However, looking back at some of the most searched terms in 2022, will provide an illuminating overview. Statista has created a graphic that showcases some of the top search trends across four categories—news, people, movies, and passings.

Most of the number one results come as no surprise. The most searched news term, for example, was Ukraine; a reminder that it has about 10 months since Russian forces invaded the country in February 2022. Similarly, in second place is Queen Elizabeth II's passing. After 70 years of service, she died at the age of 96 as Britain's longest-reining monarch and the second-longest reigning sovereign in the world. Due to her international impact, Queen Elizabeth also came up as the number one search result in passings. The second-most searched name was American comedian and TV legend Betty White, who died almost one year ago on December 31, 2021, just shy of her 100th birthday milestone.

In the category of most searched people, actor Johnny Depp came up first, with his ex-wife Amber Heard placing nearby in third place. Many recall that the two were locked in a long and contentious trial, which dominated news headlines for months. Glancing at the most-searched movies, however, offers another analysis of 2022. Marvel's Thor: Love and Thunder ranked number one, with DC's Black Adam coming in second, and Top Gun: Maverick starring Tom Cruise ranking third.

Take a look at the other top ranked searches, below.

Dinnertime in Europe Infographic

What time is dinner? This seemingly simple question has quite a different answer depending on where you are in the world. Thanks to Orkun Melih Köksal, who runs the Instagram account @loverofgeography, it's easy to see just how different dining habits are across Europe. The Dutch map lover is just 20 years old, but he's been running his account for several years and gained quite a following.

“As a little kid as young as five years old, I always had a little bit of passion for world maps or countries,” he tells My Modern Met. “I had a huge world map in my room. Every day when I came back home from school, I kept staring at the world map in my room because of how fascinating it was to me while most other kids just wouldn't care. I was playing games with myself trying to find all the countries and cities on the map. Years later when I was about 17, I saw all these mappers on Instagram and thought I can do that too but better with my own map style and not just stolen maps from Reddit. I wanted to entertain people and educate them at the same time by making maps more fun.”

He's certainly delivered on his promise. With over 63,000 followers, Köksal stays true to his “Lover of Geography” handle and delivers fun and informative content. And, he's careful to note, every map comes with a thoughtful amount of research. For instance, to create his dinnertime infographic, he looked at multiple sources.

First, he turned to Google and searched dinner times of each individual country. He then turned to his followers and asked 20 people from each country the time that they eat supper. After comparing the answers he received with those from Google, he got his average time.

All of his work naturally starts with his own curiosity. For instance, the dinner infographic originated when he noticed that Spanish exchange students would marvel at how early Dutch people eat dinner. While, at the same time, he knew that Dutch expats in Spain felt it was strange to eat so late. This bit of personal knowledge then spun into a wonderful design that sparked a lot of conversation from his followers.

This is just one of many fascinating facts he brings to light through his informative maps. Geography and culture lovers will also appreciate how often he posts so that there is always something new to learn.
