Here are three essential shading techniques to help you enhance your drawings.

Hatching

Hatching uses short, tight parallel lines to denote an area of darkness. Artists can stagger these lines or spread them further apart to create different lighting effects. You can do one show of hatches or several rows to build up larger areas of shadow.

Cross-Hatching

Cross-hatching can create deeper, richer shadows due to its intersecting lines. The technique starts by creating hatched lines, which are then crossed over in a manner that creates a texture akin to a fabric on the page. By building up the cross-hatches in certain areas, gradations of light and shade can be obtained.

Stippling

Stippling may be the most time-consuming of the techniques, but the effect is well worth it. It involves placing tiny dots in an area to create shadow. These dots, which should not touch, can be spaced differently to show levels of darkness. The further away the dots, the lighter the area will appear, while dots close together will make an area darker.

Australian pet photographer Belinda Richards of Frog Dog Studios is known for her ability to highlight the soul of her furry subjects. The results are images that become cherished keepsakes of these animals' owners. This is particularly true of the senior dogs that Richards photographs, many of whom have been in their family's lives for over a decade.

From Carla, a beagle and Cavalier King Charles mix who was rescued from a puppy mill, to Girly Girl, an English Staffordshire bull terrier who has been with her family since birth, each dog has their own unique story. Thanks to Richards' expertise, their personality shines through.

Perfecting your artistic techniques isn't easy, but thankfully some skilled artists are willing to share their knowledge to help you up your game. This includes Luiza Niechoda, who is known for her contemporary pixelated landscape paintings. Niechoda teaches My Modern Met Academy's Acrylic Painting Masterclass. In it, she shows students several tools and techniques that can be applied to any style of art.

The intermediate-level course even includes a mini-lesson on how to stretch your own canvas for those who may be interested in getting their hands dirty. From there, Niechoda shows you how to prep your canvas prior to painting before sharing how you can execute sharp, crisp lines using a few different techniques.

You'll then move into looking at basic color theory before creating a color mixing chart that will become a valuable tool for any future artwork. After sourcing images and working on a preliminary sketch, you'll follow along as Niechoda paints two different abstract landscape paintings. Whether you also are interested in painting landscapes, or simply wish to learn new skills, this course will most definitely add to your artistic toolbox.

In Acrylic Painting Masterclass: Explore Color and Abstract Landscape Painting, Niechoda will take students step by step through the creation of two contemporary abstract landscape paintings.
