Shanghai is home to some of the tallest buildings in the world. As such, its sweeping skyline fascinates both travelers and architecture lovers. Josh Turner, a New England-based videographer, set out to capture the sweeping heights of Shanghai's skyscrapers during a trip to China. The result is a dizzying yet thrilling bird's-eye view that only a skilled drone pilot could get.

Turner's video focuses on Shanghai's three tallest buildings—the Shanghai Tower, which at 2,073 feet is the third tallest building in the world; the Shanghai World Financial Center, known for its distinctive “bottle opener” top; and the Jin Mao Tower, designed after the tiered pagoda from traditional Chinese architecture. All of them are conveniently located in Shanghai's Pudong district.

The video may not be for those with a fear of heights—Turner's drone flies above the skyscrapers before gliding down their glass façades at lightning speed. His clever framing catches details like the reflection of the Jin Mao Tower on the windows of Shanghai World Financial Center or the sun shining through the gap at its top. Still, the real treat comes near the end, when the city lights come on, depicting the creative possibilities of lighting up a super tall building at night.

“I had the opportunity to visit Shanghai this past January (2024) and couldn't miss the chance to fly FPV around the 3 tallest towers in the city,” writes Turner. “Shanghai Tower stands at an impressive 632m (2,073ft) making it the tallest building in China and the 3rd tallest in the world behind the Burj Khalifa and Merdeka Tower. Shanghai Tower with the Shanghai World Financial Center (492m), and Jin Mao Tower (421m) dominate the city skyline. I also flew around the Oriental Pearl Tower and was able to catch the window washers who dangle by ropes every morning cleaning the glass. Enjoy!”

Every year, millions of monarch butterflies travel up to 2,800 miles to the forests of Central Mexico to escape the cold. After braving the elements, these butterflies turn Mexico's Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve into an orange-and-black wonderland. From October to March, they carpet the trees and the ground as they rest, reproduce, and get ready for the trip back north in the spring.

Although the life cycle of a monarch butterfly lasts about a month, the ones that are born shortly before migration delay their reproductive stage to make the trip, making them live up to nine months. This means that, from one year to the next, the butterflies that make the journey are great-great-granddaughters of those who traveled on the previous migration. And yet, they all know the way and even return to the same trees where their ancestors were born. They only fly during the day and use the sun and an “internal compass” to guide them.

Though popular in Mexico, their habitat was only discovered by the outside world in 1975 after Fred Urquhart, a Canadian zoologist, decided to track and trace the route of the butterflies he saw in his garden in Toronto. When he learned that one of the butterflies he had tagged had been seen in Mexico, he placed an ad in a newspaper asking for volunteers to go in search of the monarch butterfly's winter habitat.

What was discovered by accident became a 138,000-acre reserve that spans the states of Mexico and Michoacán. In 2008, the area was named a World Heritage site—one that received half a million visitors last season. That's why responsible tourism practices are key when visiting these sites. Walk-in guided tours are usually available, allowing visitors to get firsthand knowledge about these creatures.

Monarch butterflies are an endangered species, but over-tourism is far from the only threat they face. The rise in avocado consumption in the U.S. has turned avocado farming into a lucrative business, prompting farmers to make room for avocado orchards by cutting the oak and pine trees that surround the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. And while tourists continue to pour in, the number of butterflies that made it to their wintering grounds fell by 59% this year.

If you ever find yourself visiting this natural area, it's important to follow the guide's instructions, such as staying on the designated trails, remaining quiet to avoid disturbing the butterflies, avoiding flash photography, and protecting the insects by not bringing in pets or food. The more care we put into this natural wonder, the more people will get to witness it in the future.

If you ask 10 people when the best time to fly is, they will probably give you 10 different answers. These answers can be based on various factors, including affordability and convenience. But a recent report by Expedia definitively answers the question once and for all.

In their 2023 Air Travel Report, Expedia states that travelers should try to travel on Wednesdays. Their reasoning for this is monetary. According to them, “travelers who started a trip on a Wednesday, versus the beginning of the week (a Sunday or a Monday) saved, on average, 15% on domestic flights. For international flights, travelers who departed on Wednesday instead of during the weekend (a Sunday or a Saturday) saved 10% on average.”

If you're worried about your flight being delayed or canceled, Expedia has some advice to help alleviate those fears. They suggest leaving before 3 p.m., as “flights that depart after 3pm have the highest chance of being cancelled – a 50% higher chance, on average, than those that depart earlier in the day.” They also suggest avoiding travel during peak travel periods, especially the busy summer months.

But when should you book your flight in the first place? Expedia also has answers. According to the report, you should book on a Sunday, which has been the best day to book flights for the past 4 years. “Travelers who book on Sundays instead of Fridays tend to save, on average, around 5% on domestic flights and 15% on international flights,” Expedia states. Additionally, you should try to book at least a month in advance on domestic flights and at least 6 months ahead on international flights. Both of these measures will save you approximately 10% on average.

Expedia recently published their 2023 Air Travel Report, revealing that the best travel time is Wednesdays before 3 p.m.

Many cultures around the world mark the harvest season with unique celebrations. In Kerala, India there is a festival called Onam that takes place in August or September with a large array of events. On the fourth day of the festivities, hundreds of dancers paint their bodies and dress up as tigers. These cheerful performers then move to the beat of the drums and march through the streets of Thrissur in a folk dance known as Puli Kali—which means Tiger Dance.

This Puli Kali tradition dates back approximately 200 years. It was introduced by Maharaja Rama Varma Sakthan Thampuran, the King of Cochin from the late 18th to early 19th century, as a way to celebrate courage, bravery, and the spirit of battle. While most of the performers are usally men, women have been joining the celebrations since 2016.

At the center of the Puli Kali are those who get in costume. They don bright orange masks, complete with whiskers, and spend hours carefully decorating their bodies with paint. While some performers cover their entire bodies with tiger stripes, the more adventurous ones transform their torsos into the intimidating face of a feline. All of the body art is done by experienced artists, who begin their work as early as the night before the celebration.

Since the main theme of the Puli Kali is tiger hunting, participants divide the roles of tigers and hunters. But it's not just a reverie for the sake of tradition. Teams actually compete for prizes in categories such as best drumming team, best tableau display, best eco-friendly vehicle, and best vehicle tiger display. In 2023, the winning teams earned cash prizes of Rs 40,000 to Rs 62,500 (about $481 to $752).

The date for this festivities changes from year to year, and is usually set by the local government in the weeks leading up to the event. While Thirssur is not usually counted among India's top destinations, this colorful tradition has certainly caught the world's attention—drawing new visitors every year.

In 2020, the Gundam Factory in Yokohama, Japan, unveiled the world's tallest robot. Not only does the 60-foot-tall machine tower over the crowds of people who flock to see it, but it is also capable of movement. The colorful RX-78 Gundam manages to walk, kneel, turn its head, and point to the sky despite weighing 55,500 pounds. Anyone who has not had a chance to witness this mechanical marvel in person has to hurry though, as the Gundam Factory Yokohama has announced that it will be closing at the end of March 2024.

This is sad news for fans of Gundam and robotics. While the attraction has been open since late 2020, the giant model itself began construction back in 2014—ultimately needing six years to complete the complex figure. Understandably, the COVID-19 pandemic brought significant delays to the construction, but the payoff was well worth it when excited visitors were able to see the machine spring to life.

The massive model will be recognizable to Gundam fans, as it is closely based on the character from Yoshiyuki Tomino's and Sunrise's anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam, which debuted in 1979. Gundam has since appeared in well over 50 TV series, movies, video games, and manga. The one constructed at Yokohama was an amazingly realistic copy, and in addition to being able to move, it even featured flashing LED lights that added to the cinematic effect.

You can purchase tickets for February via Gundam Factory's website. It costs ¥1,650 (or about $11.15) per adult and ¥1,100 (approximately $7.43) for children.

Places big and small have one thing in common—they all rely on tourism to boost their economies. And much like companies, they also need an alluring logo that both inspires new customers (or travelers) and represents what's best about their area. Have you ever seen the logo for the place you live in? Maybe it's colorful and fun, or elegant and simple. Reddit user Dremarious put together a map featuring the tourism logos for all 50 U.S. states, allowing us to conveniently compare their designs.

The logos range from serious to playful. Many are produced in all caps, like Texas, Maine, Alaska, and Montana. There are also a couple of states that mix up upper and lowercase letters to be whimsical with a more relaxed typeface. Ohio incorporates its map into its logo, while Colorado features the symbol on its state flag in its design. Color can also be used to celebrate each state's culture, like Georgia using a peachy shade, and Oregon embracing a forest green.

These values can also be observed in tourism logos from around the world. Redditor LlamaDestroyer14 created regional maps compiling the logos used by tourism boards in each country. Going global, many choose to boast their national colors to stand out, like France and Denmark to name a few. Then there is Spain, which keeps its signature red and yellow hues, but also appears to pay tribute to its 20th century art movements with its daring typeface.

Other countries have chosen to ditch their national colors to make a case for their attributes. The U.S. for example, is made out of tiny dots, signaling the many cities and cultures that shape it. Meanwhile, Brazil, Ecuador, and Mexico have over four different colors in theirs to spotlight their rich biodiversity. Building from this, Australia chose to spotlight their famed kangaroos and landscapes in their vibrant logo.

Greenland is the largest island in the world. Yet, despite its prominent presence on the world map, most people know very little about its culture and the people who call this remote place home. This inspired a Greenlandic woman named Qupanuk to share and teach the world about life in Greenland through a series of insightful videos. Her channel, Q's Greenland, is a one-stop-shop to know everything about the country, from its traditional food to its unique language.

While many associate Greenland with remoteness and frigid temperatures, Qupanuk—or Q, as she is known—always takes the time to note that “life is amazing” there in her videos. On top of posting every day about what makes Greenland such a unique place, she is the country's first and only mining engineer and mother of four. Originally from Qaqortoq, in Southern Greenland, she currently lives Nuuk, the capital city of Greenland, which has a population of under 20,000.

Her channel's name, Q's Greenland, is a reference to the fact that we're only seeing Greenland through her eyes. Even so, Q's deep understanding of the country and her charming personality make her the perfect teacher of this lesser-known place. She addresses all kinds of topics through her content, ranging from how hot summers get, to how much it costs to go grocery shopping there.

Although Greenland appears very remote, Q also highlights the ways it is connected to the rest of the world.  For example, she addresses what it means for her to hold Danish citizenship–as Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. Additionally, she explains what it is like to have a front-row seat to the effects of climate change, as global warming has made the weather of Greenland much more unpredictable.

Whether it is a tour around Nuuk's tallest buildings—which are only 12 stories tall!— or a quick Greenlandic lesson, Q has painted a compelling picture of the most fascinating aspects of her home, becoming almost like an ambassador of the country to the rest of the world. Trains provide reliable, fast, and clean transportation—but apparently, they can also double as nightclubs. Every once in a while, a train in Germany becomes a party, welcoming DJs and ravers for a one-night-only reverie. Known as the Techno Train, this is not a revamped stationary car given a second chance, but rather a still-functional train that travels Bavaria with techno music blasting out of its windows.

The Techno Train is run by Haus 33, a Nuremberg nightclub. Every once in a while, they rent out an entire train, transforming all of its 12 cars into a club of its own, complete with a backstage area, dance floors, and areas to sit and recharge before returning once again to the party. The layout even allows different DJs to play at the same time, spacing them out throughout the train.

For their latest edition, the Techno Train departed from Nuremberg's Frankenstadion. From there, it went on an hours-long non-stop trip around the region before making a grand return to Nuremberg Central Station—and continuing with an after party at Haus 33 brick-and-mortar club. Unlike most raves, which take place late at night, the Techno Train departed at 3:45 PM, welcoming 20 DJs before wrapping up at 11 PM.

While some could find the confines of a train car too tight for a proper party, the videos from Techno Train show that the cars are not packed to the brim with people, allowing enough space for everyone to move and dance safely, and giving the DJs plenty of room to work. Ultimately, it looks so fun that we won't blame you for daydreaming about these parties next time you board a train or a subway. In the 1940s, a mile-long series of tunnels called the Kingsway Exchange Tunnels were constructed underneath Central London. Encompassing an area of 8,000 square miles and stretching 7.6 meters in diameter, these subterranean pathways were designed to protect Londoners during the WWII Blitz. Afterward, the Kingsway Exchange Tunnels continued to serve different secret purposes, including as a base for the Special Operations Executive—an offshoot of MI6, and the inspiration for the “Q Branch” in Ian Fleming's James Bond novels—and housing the secret “hot line” between Moscow and Washington during the Cold War. Soon, people in London might have a chance to tour this piece of history that has been kept hidden for 70 years.

The London Tunnels is a proposed project that will transform the Kingsway Exchange into a public attraction. This set of secret passageways is going to receive a $268 million renovation led by UK-based architectural firm WilkinsonEyre.

“The proposal will adaptively reuse the tunnels to host a series of experiences exploring their history, nature, science, and the arts,” the official statement says. While the plans of what will be included in the revamped version of the tunnels is not yet set in stone, it is likely that it will include various historical exhibits dedicated to the different functions of the tunnels. Additionally, it is likely that the project will bring back the “deepest licensed bar” in London from the Kingsway Exchange days, which featured fake windows and recreational activities like snooker tables.

The Kingsway Exchange was kept out of the public eye for so long due to the British Government's Official Secrets Act. After the tunnels were expanded during the Cold War, they operated the first Transatlantic telephone cable, TAT1, which helped serve as the secret telephone exchange between Washington and Moscow. While the telecommunication technology became obsolete during the 1980s, most of this equipment will be retained for education purposes and potential historical exhibits in the tunnels. Paul Baker, Director at WilkinsonEyre says: “These secret spaces present the opportunity to tell extraordinary stories that helped shape the 20th century, alongside awe-inspiring digital immersive experiences.”

The space is strategically located to give panoramic views and is complimented by foliage draping down from above. There are also several bars and lounges scattered throughout the terminal. One even has a robot bartender named Toni who serves beverages in front of an LED screen projecting scenes of the Moon reflecting on a lake.

Sixteen airports currently operate out of the terminal, and their passengers will be able to take advantage of all that it has to offer. In fact, the space is so incredible that travelers will have a good excuse to get to the airport early.

After a three and a half year renovation, Changi Airport's new Terminal 2 is open.

The immersive interior design is inspired by nature and includes lush greenery and a digital waterfall.

The space is filled with so much shopping, dining, and entertainment that it will make you want to get to the airport early.
